Les plantes de mon jardin
Prague, Spala Gallery of Hérouville-Saint-Clair May 1991
Every day, Stephan Barron sent images of the plants in his tiny garden from Herouville in France by fax to Prague.
Microcosm of the garden awakening in the spring and macrocosm of Prague regaining freedom.
Stephan Barron does not reveal the actual size of his garden to his interlocutors in Prague, thus evoking past manipulation and blindness.
Stéphan Barron sends faxes to Prague every day, for three weeks, on his daily relationship to his tiny garden located in Hérouville (Normandy). Gallery Spala – Prague – May 1991.
A historical work because very few works have been made using fax, a means of transmitting images at a distance from the 1990s. These works are real milestones in the emergence of digital art and art globalized by the Internet and mobile phones, the use of which is widespread at the turn of the 20th century.
Microcosm of the garden that awakens from winter, and macrocosm of Prague that tastes its freedom found after the fall of communism.
Stéphan Barron does not give the actual size of the garden to its recipients, thus playing on manipulation and blindness.
This work was exhibited in the retrospective Fluxus WORTLAUT at the Bochum Museum and at the Spala Gallery in Prague with works by Duchamp, Beuys, Schwitters, Cage, Paik… The idea of this work is to link the microcosm of the garden that awakens after winter and the macrocosm of Prague that tastes its rediscovered freedom after the fall of communism. Not giving the real size of the garden, spectators lose the notion of scale, can imagine a huge garden, metaphor for the planetary garden. This textual, conceptual, graphic and planetary work is like those made in the 1980s, a link articulating the avant-gardes and art of the 21st century. The work plays local and global, and expresses our dual condition: human, terrestrial and planetary. In places of life and on networks. This work expresses the interdependence of places. It is thirty years before the awareness of climate and ecology, a plea for biodiversity in the city, the relationship between local action and the overall environment. We are related.
